1776 – The final draft of the Declaration of Independence was submitted to the Continental Congress

1914 – Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were shot to death while on an official visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. Many credit this as the event that led to the start of World War I

1953 – The first Chevrolet Corvette was assembled by workers in a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan

1997 – Evander Holyfield had his ear bitten off by Mike Tyson in the third round of their heavyweight match. Tyson would be disqualified from the match and suspended from boxing
